PUEBLO, Colo. — The Colorado Department of Corrections has paid more than $1.6 million to a district’s attorney’s office to prosecute an inmate accused of killing a correctional officer and attacking a another one.

The Pueblo Chieftain reported Monday that the billings by 16th Judicial District Attorney James Bullock cover legal fees for prosecuting 40-year-old Miguel Contreras-Perez from October 2012 to July 1, 2019.

Contreras-Perez has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to first-degree murder in the death of 55-year-old Mary Ricard.

He is also charged with attempted murder and assault in the attack on another officer in the Arkansas Valley prison in September 2012.

Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty. A trial in Pueblo District Court is scheduled for January.
